Biggest Regrets in Life

I tend to scan through most of the inspirational emails that I receive and then delete them, however every now and again I find one that I read from beginning to end and consider it worth sharing. Recently an email found it's way into my inbox that I think is worth commenting on.

It was written by a woman who worked in palliative care. Her patients were those who had gone home to die. Some incredibly special times were shared. As each patient grappled with their mortality, a few common threads emerged.

The following regrets were mentioned over and over and they are worth contemplating while we still have life:

I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me When our lives are almost over and we can look back, we see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people have not lived their dreams and it was due to choices that they had or had not made. Try to achieve at least some of your dreams. When you lose your health, it is too late. Use the freedom of health to go for it.

I wish I hadn't worked so hard This resonates with many men patients. Due to being a workaholic it is too easy to miss the joys in your children's successes and the love and contentment of your partner's companionship. Simply simplifying your lifestyle and making intentional choices makes it possible live on another level of income. Creating space in your life opens doors to new opportunities.

I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings So many people suppress their feelings in to avoid conflict, which often results in settling for mediocrity and never becoming authentic. Although we cannot control the reactions of others, when we speak honestly, it elevates relationships to new and healthier levels. Either that or it releases the unhealthy relationship from your life. Either way, you will be living authentically.

I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends We tend to get so caught up in our lives that we let friendships slip away with time. There have been many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved. When you are faced with approaching death, the physical details of life are no longer as important. It is all comes down to love and relationships in the end.

I wish that I had let myself be happier Many found at the end that happiness is a choice. They had remained in old patterns and habits allowing comfort of familiarity to rule. Fear of change caused them to pretend to others and to themselves that they were content. However, they yearned to laugh loudly and behave outrageously at times.

Life is a choice. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness.

A Guide to Healthy, Balanced Living

I received an interesting list of different things to do in order to live a healthy, balanced lifestyle recently and was rather inspired. So, I decided to post a few items on the list to motivate me to live them out as well as to share them generally.

The first lot relate to health matters:

drink lots of water
eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar
eat more that grows on plants and less that are manufactured in plants
live with energy, enthusiasm and empathy
play more
read more
give yourselves 10 minutes of silence per day
sleep for 7 hours a night
take a half hour daily walk with a smile on your face

The next batch of wise words deal with personality issues:

don't compare your life with others as you have no idea what each other's journeys are about
throw out the negative thoughts about the things you cannot control
know your limits and don't overdo it
don't take yourself so seriously
don't waste time and energy on gossip
dream while you are awake
life is too short to waste time hating anyone
make peace with the past so that it won't spoil the present
you alone are in charge of your happiness
life is a school, so realize that you are here to learn and that problems are a part of the curriculum that appear and will fade away, while the lessons will last forever
smile and laugh more
agree to disagree when necessary - you don't have to win every argument

On issues of society:

call your family regularly
give something good to others every day
forgive frequently
spend time with those under the age of 7 and over the age of 70
try and make 3 people smile each day
what others think of you is not your business
your job won't take care of you when you are ill, however your friends will, so keep in touch

The last few reminders of reality deal with life:

do the right thing
eliminate what isn't useful, beautiful or joyful from your life
no matter how good or bad a situation, it always changes
no matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up
the best is still to come
be happy
be thankful for life

Enjoy and live them out!

Here We Go Again

Well, another year has passed by and yet another year looms ahead of us. Believe it or not, I have already heard someone utter the words, "this year is going so fast." Even more frightening, I agree as it is time for me to return to the office tomorrow!

This is usually the time when we all smugly sit down and make lists of new year's resolutions with great intent. Of course, by the end of January, most of us have already given up on the vast majority of them. My usual trick is to attempt to learn something new each year and I have done pretty well in the past too.

However, this year I feel a little different. I do still have a few goals in mind, but somehow they are not in the forefront of my mind, like before. I think that this year will be more about being, than doing. I want to come to the end of 2011 knowing that I lived life fully; that I cried hard, laughed hard, danced a lot, helped out, accepted aid and made others smile. I want to be more spontaneous and find joy, or at least contentment, in everyday little wonders. I want to walk in the rain, giggle in quiet places like libraries and wink at cute children. I want to experiment with wacky hairstyles, even at my age, drink different flavoured coffees and skip along merrily in the shopping mall. I want to sit up all night watching a series I enjoy on TV, drive to some unknown place just for the fun of it and dance madly in the front at a rock concert. I want this year to be full of little serendipities where I contentedly follow the moment. And in the times of difficulty, grief and hardship, may I feel enough to savour the good times, but be able to move on when the time has passed.

Roll on 2011, I don't want to say, "Here we go again," but rather, "Here is a moment to embrace."

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is Nearly Over

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month in many different countries. It has been encouraging to see the growth of support by the general public.

My support this month took the part of a 5 kilometer walk in aid of breast cancer at Mark's Park. I was amazed at the amount of people who took part in the event. There must have been somewhere around 20 000 people or more. There were so many walkers that during the entire walk, we had to stroll as the roads were so crammed with people. The atmosphere was electric and full of hope and it was great to be a part of it.

I know that there have been loads of other initiatives from all sectors of society in aid of breast cancer this month and as a woman I have to say a huge thank you to the organizers of every one of them. I would also like to applaud the survivors of breast cancer and wish them all of the best for their wonderful futures.

The big challenge is for November, December and next year. Now that Breast Cancer Month is nearly over, will we continue to give the fight the exposure and support that it still needs?

The Best Brilliant Ideas for Humanity

Di Smith, from KwaZulu Natal, is one of the entrants of The Best Brilliant Ideas for Humanity contest. This is an interesting competition where the emphasis is on a win-win situation for all. Di came up with the brilliant idea to write an inspiring book about South Africa which is like a journey. The book is called "You're Awesome" and includes daily lessons of life and takes examples from wise South Africans such as Madiba and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.
There is a simple message for each week in the year.

Live Life Fully

Someone sent me this pic on an email recently and I loved it so much that I had to share it. It encapsulates living life fully. The expression on the guy's face is one of sheer childish delight. There is something about the innocent joy of children that is contagious. Kids don't over analyse life, they simply live and explore and experience all that is in their path. They are not afraid to ask awkward questions and they have a genuine honesty about everything that they do.
I want to live like that. I want to enjoy all that is around me in pure simplicity without hidden agendas. I choose to delight in the little things that occur every day. I want to live life fully.

International Rhino Day

Sometimes I feel ashamed to be a human. All of the cruelty and harshness that we inflict, not only on each other, but on vulnerable animals too. I am not one of those people who value animals lives above humanity, but surely we should value every living creature. I acknowledge that there are times when culling, and even hunting, is necessary, but the senseless slaughtering of beasts for fun or for illogical unproven so-called medicinal purposes - come on! Particularly when the creature is already an endangered species. Soon there wont be any more of the fake medicine anyway.

Rhino horn is made up of keratin, the word you often see somewhere on your shampoo bottle. Keratin is basically very compacted hair. Animal hooves and your fingernails are the same thing. So, for goodness sake, or for the rhinos sake, if you are that desperate for the medicine, bite your bloody nails! And as for the game rangers and veterinarians who are in on the scam, shame on you! And that is being exceptionally polite. Money is not worth the price of extinction.

Africa has most of the few rhinos that are still alive and the rise in poaching has escalated in the last year to frightening degrees. The poaching has also become highly sophisticated. What can we do to help save the rhino? Money always helps so donate to the WWF Rhino Campaign. Make people aware of the plight of the rhinos and spread the cause. Educate your children regarding conservation. I'm sure that you can come up with more ideas.

Let's be humane and do something!

Lighten Up

Lead SA has come up with another interesting initiative for South Africa. We have been challenged to drive our vehicles during the day with our headlights on. Apparently, research shows that when we drive with our lights on during daylight hours as well as night, accident statistics decrease. The lights make us more noticeable and we are seen more clearly by other drivers and pedestrians. The lights also make our vision clearer, particularly our peripheral vision.

In a country with such high traffic accident stats, we should surely do anything in our power to make the roads safer. I put my lights on today, and although I saw many other drivers with their headlights burning, there were still many more who had no lights shining. It is something to remember. During my second trip of the day I only remembered halfway to my destination that my lights were off. I am fortunate enough to have a car that beeps at me when I leave my headlights on, as there could be a problem if I wasn't reminded to turn my lights off at the end of the drive.

So, how about it? Wake up tomorrow morning, leap into your faithful carrier and turn on those lights. You will find yourself smiling at every other driver who has their lights on, as if you all belong to some secret superhero club.

Spring in Jozi

As I was driving to work yesterday I drove past West Park Cemetery and saw a row of gorgeous trees in full bloom. Beautiful blossoms in white, pink and cerise seemed to have popped out overnight.
My first reaction was to smile, then after clicking away with my iPhone, I realised that we are now truly experiencing the wonders of spring. Amazing weather, flowers everywhere and no more winter wear. I love this time of the year.
My second thought was that there was so much beauty in a place of death. As tragic as death may be, life continues and beauty still finds a place.
So look around as you live your day and find the beauty in unexpected places.

As I drove past this sign today I had to wonder if it would be found in many other countries of the world, and if so, would it be in a First World country. Oh, I love the surprises and serendipities of South Africa.

Positive Outlook

Despite country-wide strikes, there is always place for a positive outlook in South Africa. With the country supporting the Springboks against the All Blacks in today's rugby match at Soccer City in Soweto, it would be easy to be negative due to the Springboks last few matches.

However, instead we have turned the occasion into the opportunity to break a world record. Every South African spectator has been challenged to take a South African flag to the match as they are trying to break the world record for the most flags being waved in a stadium at the same time. Apparently there is also an initiative where they are trying to break the record for the most Elvis personators at a sports match.

Another positive for South Africa is that despite the crippling strikes to our state hospitals, Lead SA challenged the country to volunteer their services at hospitals during the strike and there has been an overwhelming response with volunteers coming forth from all sectors of society, including our health minister.

Stay upbeat South Africa and have a positive outlook!

South African "Gees"

I know that this is a reallly bad quality photo, but I was driving in the rush-hour traffic trying to snap him with my iPhone while he was cycling furiously along the side of Main Road, Bryanston. I still could not resist posting the pic because this wonderful man is the epitome of South African "Gees".
Talk about still flying the flag, this guy should win the award for it. Everyone who drove past him landed up smiling. I think he is the coolest South African I have seen since the World Cup.

Stand Up

Lead SA is a new initiative encouraging every South African to make a difference by making small changes to their lives to make South Africa a better, crime-free nation. Similar to Nelson Mandela Day, where South Africans gave 67 minutes of their time to serve those less fortunate than ourselves in some way, Lead SA is motivating us to live daily for a better SA.
Small things like volunteering for an NGO regularly, driving at the speed limit, treating people with dignity and not talking on your cellphone while driving will all make a difference.
I have decided to search for the strengths in everyone I come across rather than judging their weaknesses. What are you going to do to stand up and make a difference?

Fly the Flag Fridays

So many people have made comments when they have seen that I still have my South African mirror socks and the SA flag on my car. It seems that because the 2010 FIFA World Cup is over, we apparently should remove all of our WC regalia. The thing is I loved the patriotism which sprung up all over the country and I am not quite ready for it to end yet.
So, you can see why I now totally endorse and support the Fly the Flag Fridays campaign. Instead of wearing Bafana Bafana shirts like we did on Football Fridays, we are now encouraged to wear the colours of our flag or display the flag somewhere, somehow on Fridays. Let's do it, Friday is a few days away. I dare you!

Moses Mabhida Stadium is Still My Favourite Stadium

I love this pic of Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. I took the photo with my iPhone before the start of the Australia vs Germany game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which seems so long ago now. MMS is a beautiful stadium, by day and by night. I loved the lighting display along the arch on the night I was there. I am still determined to do the extreme adventure swing at the stadium on one of my forays to the warmer city of Durbs.
I must say that our stadiums are fantastic, but there is something about MMS that crept in my heart and it is still my favourite.

With the 2010 FIFA World Cup winding down to the last four teams in the semi finals, we need to look ahead to life in South Africa after the World Cup. The four teams left are Uruguay, who meet the Netherlands on 6 July at 8:30pm SA time, and Germany vs Spain on 7 July, also at 8:30pm.After all the drama of the last few games, these games promise to be exciting. All of the teams who I chose to cheer on, are now out of the World Cup and I am trying to decide who to support out of these last four teams. I love the spunk of the Dutch supporters and may be swayed in their direction.

They are the third African team to ever reach the quarter finals and should they make it through to the semis, they will be the first African team ever to do so.

What Will We Do When it is All Over?

Can you believe how quickly the 2010 FIFA World Cup is progressing? Before we know it, it will all be over. After the years of preparation and hype, it is going to be finished in less than two weeks time.
I have haphazardly supported football in the past, but during this World Cup I have become an avid supporter. I didn't know what to do with myself last night as there was no football to watch, while the teams all have a break before the quarter finals. Thank God Wimbledon was on to distract me. Even though Federer was defeated, Nadal's match was exciting.
We will miss the football matches when it is all over and will have to find something new to latch on to. Maybe then we can prepare for an Olympics in SA...

World Cup Snippets

The 2010 FIFA World Cup has been a tournament of surprises with both of the previous World Cup finalists being knocked out of the first round and teams like North Korea ranked 106th in the world going through. Last night gave us another surprise with one of the favourites going out as Spain defeated Portugal. We seem to have a strong South American contingent now.
It has all been a lot of fun and I have loved my part as host to the nations.

Dutch Supporters Convoy

Look at this amazing photo of the Dutch supporters travelling from one game in the 2010 FIFA World Cup to the next. Led by their Orange double-decker bus, the Dutch Supporters are on route from their camp site in Pretoria to their next game against Japan in Durban.

Their convoy travelled the 636 km route and was made up of 175 campers, trucks, busses and jeeps – the convoy was 6 kms long and all orange.

They know how to support their team!

Now that South Africa is no longer playing in the World Cup, I have been heartened to hear all of the positive reports about South African's picking up the gauntlet to continue hosting the event with enthusiasm and "gees".

I heard an interview with a German journalist on the radio yesterday where he was raving about South Africa's hospitality and I read a wonderful letter from a young American woman based in South Africa over the last few months and how she praised us for our warmth and acceptance of foreigners. Again, I heard an Aussie journalist this morning praising us for the best World Cup he has attended in the last four. All I can say is may we keep it up. Go South Africa.

Well done to the boys! The whole of Africa was rooting for Bafana Bafana yesterday, and although they did not get through to the next round in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, they beat France 2-1, which is something to be proud of. All South Africans are proud of their performance yesterday. Now we will get behind our second choice teams and continue to support the World Cup.

Germany versus Australia

It was a wonderful experience attending the Germany versus Australia match on Sunday at Moses Mabhida Stadium in the delightfully warm climate of Durban. Although I was supporting Germany, I ended up shouting for Australia in sympathy as the Germans deftly scored goal after goal. The Aussie supporters were full of spirit and a joy to watch, however they became quieter as the match progressed. I missed the usual Bafana supporters who still have the best spirit and most colour.
With regards to the vuvuzela complainants, I was amused to see that the vast majority of blasters were the foreigners. Of course, I took my vuvu along and attempted to give it a good blast every now and again. My daughter put me to shame as her blast sounded exactly right, while mine sound like an ox being slaughtered or an elephant giving birth.
I loved every moment of the beautiful game in my favourite stadium. Go Durbs and well done, Germany!

United We Stand

What a day! I managed to make my way to Sandton in between appointments yesterday and what a joy it was. Incredible scenes of support and patriotism from all ages, sizes, colours and types of people.

Vuvus blaring, people dancing, cops smiling, yellow and green, crowds, fun and laughter, tears and pride are all snippets of the not-to-be-missed experience. I am so looking forward to my first match, now more than ever.

What an incredible nation South Africa is.

The vibe in Johannesburg just gets better and better. World Cup Spirit is alive and thriving. The city is looking so colourful and the means of showing support are becoming more and more creative. I saw someone's hubcaps painted like soccer balls with the South African flag yesterday. I am going to miss all of this when the World Cup is over.

There is an amazing vibe in Johannesburg as we are six days away from kickoff. There are flags, footballs, vuvuzelas and Makarapas everywhere and people are dressed in football regalia much of the time. Great fun. I am really looking forward to my first match.

Another 90 000 tickets for the all of the matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup have been released today and are on sale at the ticketing venues around the country. This is the FIFA Ticketing Centre in Sandton where I went the other day to collect my tickets. Apparently the queue this morning winds around the block as eager fans attempt to get tickets for the more popular games. People have been queueing since last night. What spirit!

19 Days to Go to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa

With 19 days left to the opening of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, I have decided to join in the football fever and excitement by posting football related pics everyday. Driving around Johannesburg these days is great fun with the vibe being very clearly World Cup vibe.

Cars have flags attached to them or window socks showing the driver's team support. Flags fly from walls and windows all over the suburbs and shopping centres. People walk around in Bafana Bafana's green and yellow football jerseys or t-shirts.

I saw a car with a South African flag bonnet sock yesterday, which was huge and so cool. My friend saw a young man in a Mercedes which he had spray painted in the colours of the South African flag. People are seriously getting into the mood. I have also seen that some people have painted the walls surrounding their homes with SA flags.

There is also a very common sound in the air these days. It's heard on the radio, on TV and in the neighbourhoods. The blast of the vuvuzela. Whether you hate it or love it, it is here to stay and does add to the atmosphere of building excitement.

So, my salute to football fever, apart from my flags, mirror socks and Bafana shirt, is to snap football fever shots and post them for the next two months. If you have any great pics to share, join in the fun.

The Bluff Aliens

The close knit community of the Bluff in Durban, KwaZulu Natal is abuzz with nervous excitement over the alleged sightings of giant like forms on the beaches and in the community.

I write this purely from hearsay and have no proof whatsoever, just stories passed on from those who have friends on the Bluff.

According to my source there were three separate incident of “alien” sightings recently on the Bluff. One of the sightings was from a lady who was walking on the beach when she noticed two people far ahead of her on the beach. They were both dressed in long coats and seemed to be rather large. Being a little nervous she decided to leave, but was intrigued because they seemed strange. As she got a little closer she could not see them clearly but noticed that they were extraordinarily tall, like giant men. She did not stick around to check them out.

The second incident was from a young woman who was leaving early in the morning for work while it was still dark. As she drove up her driveway her car suddenly stopped and would not restart. In the beam of the headlights she noticed some huge men in overcoats standing before her. In panic she reached for her mobile phone, but it was dead, so she screamed in terror. Her scream seemed to cause reaction from them and they disappeared into the darkness. As soon as they left, her car started and her phone came back to life.

The final story revolves around someone my contact personally knew. He is a young man who was in the car with some mates one night. One of the guys wanted a smoke, so they stopped the vehicle and he climbed out to puff away on his cigarette. While waiting, the driver turned on the headlights to check that they were safe in the area. Once again, caught in the beam of the headlights were huge beings dressed in long coats. He yelled at his mate to get in the car and the “aliens” vanished in the darkness.

Intriguing and creepy, all at the same time. A part of me believes them and a part of me dismisses it as nonsense. So I decided to google “Bluff Aliens” and found a forum from Africa Aviation where the vast majority of contributors were cynical and making tongue in cheek remarks. I did however find one interesting comment.

“On the serious side. We get constant calls from that area on the NSRI cell phone for the strange lights sightings offshore. It’s got to a point where we will do nothing about it unless we get more than three separate independent sightings from different points on the bluff.”

According to my source, there have also been sightings of lights and activity at night at the old unused Naval base in the area.

I have absolutely no idea what to make of it. Most people seem to blame it on what’s being smoked on the Bluff. Whatever it is, it sure generates excitement. Maybe the movie, District 9 wasn’t so far-fetched after all. Perhaps the sequel to District 9 could be called “The Bluff Aliens”.

Action Netball - the Agony and the Ecstasy

For those who have been following the antics of the Dixie Chicks, the action netball team I belong to, here is an update of our progress.

The Agony
I am reminded of one of my previous blogs about action netball for the over forties. Well, it would seem that agony is par for the course for an over forty prancing around a netball court. Stiff limbs and hurt pride are a usual result at the end of each match. However, it seems that the under forties have suffered just as much.
One of our younger players has had to pull out due to an ankle injury. She had the cheek to injure herself in the middle of a tight and exciting game, leaving us at the mercy of a young and vicious team. Fortunately, we managed to find a substitute and went on to win the game.
Another player has had a fingernail ripped back during practice causing blood to trickle out making her designer nail look very Gothic. Not good for her sexy little image, at all. To her credit, she was of strong South African stock and practiced on.
A number of players have had tumbles and spills resulting in 'roasties' and bruises all over their bodies. However, the creme' da le creme' has to be yours truly. In true fighter style, not to be outdone by the youngsters, I was desperately clawing my way to victory during a practice on Sunday morning. My able opponent would not be outdone and in the ensuing tussle, I felt myself falling rapidly towards the gravel coating of the tennis court. Remembering my last tumble on the astro-turf and the big graze on my knee, I pulled up my knees and spread out my hands. The next thing I knew was that I was face to face with the gravel. I didn't graze my knees, but I tumbled forward on to my face and kissed the dirt. Ouch. Blood flowed. Oohs and ahs were said, water was produced and then our very compassionate captain promptly yelled that it was time to continue practice. So, continue we did, even though I looked like a swollen lipped monster.

The Ecstasy
Enough of the hardships. What of the ecstasy? Well, as mentioned before in my ramblings of action netball, there is nothing quite like winning and it has been a joy of major proportions to have won a number of games at last. Where we once were bottom of the lowest league, we now sit in third place and may even make the semi finals. And that, my friends, makes it all worthwhile, although I must admit I thought that I would have lost a few kilos by now.

The biggest reason would be to help unite South Africa. We live in an amazingly diverse nation, yet we still have a long way to go with regards to racial harmony. When we wear our Bafana Bafana supporter shirts, we stand out as being proudly South African, regardless of our culture. We help to create a South African culture.

Apparently, if you go to Sasol garage convenience stores and order a Chaywa cappuccino in your Football Friday gear, you will receive it for half the usual price. Being, a cappuccino lover, that sounds like a good deal to me.

Support the World Cup

As South Africans, we are hearing all about how we need to host the World Cup well. We are generally a hospitable people, but there is also a lot of negativity in the land. By wearing our yellow and greens, we are showing support for our beloved country hosting the World Cup. We are joining the clan of positive thinkers and the more positive people we have, the more of a success it will be.

Spar Gift Vouchers

Some Spar stores, according to an excerpt which I heard on Radio Highveld, will randomly pick a Football Friday supporter who is shopping in the store on Fridays. The lucky supporter will win a Spar voucher.

Fun, Fun, Fun

I am a sucker for having fun. Joining in any initiative that has a worthy cause is good enough for me to participate. The cool thing about wearing Football Friday shirts is that I find myself smiling at all the other supporters during the day. I find that there seems to be an atmosphere of friendliness, and God knows how much we all need that in our lives.

Two Netball Wins for Dixie Chicks

Yesterday I told you to watch this space. Last night, the Dixie Chicks played our sixth game. We were totally amped and ready to go for the gold. Before the game, we excitedly hyped ourselves up imagining how cool a second win would be.

First Half

We started with a bang and shot a few hoops in succession, and then I guess we felt a little cocky, thinking we had the match. But within minutes our opponents shot back and for the rest of the first half we managed to just stay ahead. By half time we were leading 8-7.

Half Time

We had our half time pep talk and we were desperate to stay ahead. Our faults were much less than usual. Our passing was great and the team was gelling really well. We were feeling strong.

Disaster Struck in the Second Half

We started the second half strongly and were playing like mini superstars. It felt so good. The next thing our Goal Defense was lying on the astro-turf squirming in pain and shaking like a leaf. She had tangled with another player and fallen, wrenching her ankle badly. She couldn't move and was in obvious pain. We had to carry her off the court in order to get her injury treated. What a blow.

The Show Must Go On

A substitute was found on the sidelines from one of the other teams and we continued play. Immediately our opponents shot two goals in a row. I wondered if we had been badly rattled and whether it would affect the game, but then the tide suddenly turned. We played like champs. Darting here and there, throwing straight sharp balls, shooting in the hoops until the final whistle blew.

Another Win

We had won 18-11. What a joy. After thanking the other team, we whooped and giggled in delight. It feels so much better to win, than to lose. We checked on our player, who was still in pain on the sidelines and waved her goodbye as she left early. From almost bottom of the league, we now find ourselves in third place.

Dare I say again, "Watch this space"?

Dixie Chicks Finally Win Action Netball Match

A while back I gave some advice on Action Netball for the over forties. Well, this over forty has pushed through with the game and together with my team, the Dixie Chicks, have finally won a game!

Beginners Game
Being a new team, with women who either hadn't played for years or, like me, had never played before, we were entered in the lowest league. Much to our disgust, we were thoroughly thrashed in our first game and we limped off the court in a shell shocked state. We were exhausted and our pride had taken a huge knock. However, we were determined to beat the next team, after all they were also in the lowest league.

A Run of Losses
For the next three games we lost dismally, no matter how hard we tried. Our tiny ref seemed to give us a hard time too as she could see that we had no idea about the rules of the game. There were many times when I felt like chucking her off the court as she continually blasted that whistle. We were always being blown up. First it was foot faults, then when we managed to work that one out, it was handling. Finally managing to handle the ball better, we were blown up for net abuse - I felt like abusing someone else... And just when we thought we were getting it all together we kept being penalized for contact. Would we ever learn?

Finally a Win
Game number five, we entered the court raring to go, desperate for a win. We were fitter, we were wiser and we were hungry. And we did it! We finally managed to beat another team by two whole points. What a feeling. We were all delighted. You would swear that we had won the Olympics. We cheered and high-fived and knocked back shooters in celebration. Even our tiny but tormenting ref smiled and said that we had improved.

What Next?
It is our sixth game tomorrow night and having tasted victory, we are feeling confident and hungry for another win. No longer at the bottom of the league, we are determined to keep it that way. So, watch this space.

Soccer Village

I recently discovered that the area where I live is becoming a soccer village during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. I had heard that many of the townhouse complexes were being used as accommodation for tourists thronging into the nation causing the residents to earn some well deserved extra cash. All the residents need to do is move in with family or friends for six weeks and make their unit available to the agents, who then arranges the accommodation and other necessities.

Townhouse Complexes Thrive

It turns out that there are around thirty complexes in my suburb participating and our area will become a soccer village. Roads will be closed and new bus routes introduced, as tourists wander the streets.

Hosting the World

I'm sure that soccer village will cause quite a stir and some inconvenience for the locals, however it is a wonderful opportunity for us rise up as excellent hosts and make some money out of it.

Moment of Opportunity

This is a time for the innovative 'boer maak 'n plan' people of the Rainbow Nation to find a gap and grab hold of opportunity. Surely there is something for everyone. I, for one, am straining my brain for an idea. I know that my lightbulb moment is on it's way. Please feel free to egg it on.

It's All About Attitude

I know that there are many doomsayers and predictions of debt, disaster and destruction. However, I also know that opportunity lurks expectantly. If I focus on the negative, I'll miss that tiny gap.

So, rather than moaning about the changes in my suburb, I choose to use them to my advantage.

National Cleavage Day and Football Friday Rolled into One

I naturally put on my Bafana Bafana shirt this morning as I prepared for the day. After all, it is Friday and in South Africa that is translated as Football Friday or Vuvu Friday. I love the fact that I don't have to think about what to wear on Fridays.

National Cleavage Day
The next thing I discovered that today is National Cleavage Day, to promote the prevention of breast cancer, certainly a worthy cause for any woman, or man for that matter.

My problem was that my Bafana shirt shows absolutely zero cleavage.

Proudly South African and Proudly Woman
Being proudly South African and even more proudly all woman, I wanted to participate in both Football Friday and National Cleavage Day. So I dug through my wardrobe until I found my green super springbok t-shirt with the yellow trim and low cut neckline. Aha, the right colours and cleavage to bare.

The True Heroes of National Cleavage Day
I proudly donned my new shirt for the day, stood tall and headed for work, thanking God that I have been spared the trauma that so many women have had to face in the struggle against breast cancer. They are the true heroes of National Cleavage Day.

Moses Mabhida Stadium Skycar Problems

One week late, I have discovered that there are problems with the skycar at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. As many will know, I am a MMS junkie and happened to be in Durban the week that the skycar started operating causing me to be one of the first rush of skycar riders. I loved the experience and have promised myself to return to do the adventure walk and the bungi swing.

Stuck Skycar

Last week the skycar got stuck near the top of the arch causing a group to be stranded on the viewing platform. Apparently the staff were not equipped to deal with the ramifications as some people were distressed and even a little panicky. There was no shade, no water available and insufficient harnesses to aid the group on the walk down.

Involuntary Adventure Walk

The stranded group eventually had to do the adventure walk to get back down to ground level. The adventure walk is 550 steps down the arch and rather steep. I'm sure that it is called an adventure walk for a reason. One elderly lady collapsed on the walk and had to be aided by another stranded passenger. Another man had to carry his child who was unharnessed.

No Comment

Julie May Ellingsworth, head of Special Projects has given no comment on the problem and Municipal Manager, Mike Sutcliffe has only said that safety is the city's priority and that the skycar is safe.

Sixty Day Deadline

The skycar is no longer operating, however Durban municipality has been given 60 days to make sure that the skycar is safe after it got stuck.

"The municipality was issued a contravention notice and given 60 days to improve on the things highlighted during the inspection," SAPA quoted labour department chief inspector Thobile Lamati as saying.

He said that after the 60 days there will be another inspection and if the city hasn't complied they could be shut down.

I hope that they get it all worked out in time. It is a wonderful feature on a beautiful stadium with fantastic views of Durban.

I have been looking at the South African news this week and I have come to the conclusion that we live in a crazy world. Each news item is a perspective of some sort, of life in South Africa. Although we are a microcosm of the world, we are a pretty unique microcosm.

Jub Jub gets out on R10 000 bail

I am actually at a loss at what to say on Jub Jub's bail figure, or even that he was given bail for such irresponsible behaviour. One part of me empathizes with the protesting school kids, but another part of me feels that they are behaving in the same manner as Jub Jub with their death threats and rock throwing. So much anger has caused many to lose sight of the tragedy of four young people being killed prematurely.

Price War on Uncapped ADSL

Well done to MWeb for starting uncapped ADSL prices. Vox have already jumped on board and I'm sure that others will too. It is a a sliver of hope in the recessionary times we still find ourselves in. Although it is not huge news on the grand scale, it is good news and worth twittering and chirping about.

Potholes in Jozi

The potholes in Joburg are as bad as ever. As fast as they are repaired, they develop again. The roads agency is not coping with the ever increasing problem. I personally have gone through three tires in six months and have had more than enough. On a positive note, it has been encouraging to see local businesses stepping up and repairing the potholes and gaining a little marketing out of it.

Brutal Murder of a Seventeen Year Old Schoolgirl

The senseless killing of Anike Smit brought outrage throughout the nation with the Freedom Front calling for a state of emergency. South Africans have had enough of crime and the huge response to the new release of "Shout" organised by Danny K and Kabelo have proved this. Surely in pre World Cup South Africa, our government and law enforcement should be doing everything in their power to reduce crime.

Die Antwoord

There are rumours that the irreverent South African music sensation, Die Antwoord, are being signed up with one of the world's largest recording companies. In one week they leapt to fame on the internet with artists like Katy Perry twittering praise about them. They are an indie band glorifying the "zef" side of South African culture with an interesting music style soaked in foul language. Like I said, it's a crazy world we live in.

Perspective

So, at the end of the short news wrap up, we have had a week of tragedy, frustration, hope and surprise. Through it all, we continue to build up to our event of the decade and each one of us loudly voices our opinions and perspectives. You got to love this land.

Cupcake Craze

What is the big deal about cup cakes? As far as I know they have been around for years, but suddenly in the last year or so they seem to be the big trend. Designer cup cake shops have opened, cup cake tea parties abound and in the local supermarkets cup cakes of every style are on offer.

I can see in my minds eye the next designer cup cake to appear - the 2010 World Cup Cup Cake. Well, everybody else is jumping on the FIFA World Cup band wagon, so why not cup cakes as well? We could have cup cakes representing each team and supporters could order a Khumalo Cup Cake, a Cameroon Cup Cake or a Cafu Cup Cake, decorated beautifully in their respective team colours. Jabulani football cup cakes would be available too. We could get more and more creative - or corny..

What is the Appeal?

What is it about cup cakes that makes them so popular? It is not the size of them as after two bites they are finished. The best part of any cake to me is the icing, but there is nowhere near enough icing on a cup cake. I will concede that cupcakes look pretty and dainty and perhaps appeal to the feminine side, but great big delicious cakes look pretty attractive too.

Cute Factor

Maybe it is the cute factor. Everyone falls for things in miniature. Take a walk through a shopping mall holding a new puppy and watch everyone's behaviour become silly - high pitched voices and baby talk. I suppose a cup cake is a miniature cake, so we become silly about them.

Cup Cake Fight

You know what would be a perfect ending to a blog about cup cakes? A cup cake fight. Haven't you always wanted to smash a cream cake in someone's face? Or is it only me? Well, a cup cake squashed in your face wouldn't be so offensive or messy. You could probably get away with it. I think I need to go and buy some cup cakes.

Seize the Day

Life is Short
Life is really too short not to enjoy each moment. I know that there are times when we need to grieve or contemplate, but generally we find it easy to grumble. I think that we need to find more moments in each day to simply enjoy. We need to find the small things to delight in. We need to seize each moment of fun and document it in our hearts.

Life has it's Hardships
I know that hardship is a part of life and i've learnt that what doesn't kill you, strengthens you, but I also know that we need to move on. We can't get stuck in those miserable places.

A Mission in Life
So, I am making it a mission to grab hold of a fun moment in each day. Yesterday's fun moment was while looking for something in a party shop. Trying on silly glasses and hats and taking pics and giggling. Such a small thing, yet causing much laughter and fun.

The Simple Life
It is the simple things in life which bring much joy and laughter.
Little moments which we so often miss. A smile, a helping hand, a cute puppy. I saw a man give a few loose coins to a homeless man yesterday, then he handed him two cigarettes, and finally he lit one of the cigarettes for him. Such a little thing, yet it left the homeless man smiling. It also cheered me up. Somebody showed a little concern.

Look Around
So now I am going to be actively looking for simple joys in the everyday. That aught to take the mediocrity out of the mundane. Put a little spring in my step.

Football Friday

Being proudly South African, I have decided to jump on the "Football Friday" band wagon. I was very kindly given a Bafana Bafana shirt the other day and I have been patiently waiting for Friday to arrive so that I could wear it with all the other South Africa supporters.

WHERE ARE ALL THE 'FOOTBALL FRIDAY' FELLOWS?

I must say that I felt a little lonely as I gaily stepped out in my yellow and greens. There were not too many others dressed similarly. As I went about my business, I kept peering around to see more soccer shirts. Each time I saw someone else wearing Bafana kit, I was so excited. I felt like a little kid on Halloween allowed to go 'trick or treating'. It reminded me of school days, when we could go to school in 'civvies' instead of our regular school uniform. Now, I just want to see more of us enjoying the treat.

SPORTS UNITES A NATION

Having recently watched "Invictus" and remembering the incredible vibe at that time, encourages me to get behind the boys and support them wholeheartedly in this 2010 FIFA World Cup. I recall when we won the Rugby World Cup in South Africa all those years ago, how we danced together in the streets and celebrated as one. Well, we probably won't win this one, but let's celebrate nevertheless.

White Water Rafting in Parys

Parys

I have never been to Parys before and I must say that I was most pleasantly surprised by this quaint little town. It is reminiscent of Clarens, full of arty decor stores and trendy coffee shops and restaurants. Although a small town, it is full of character.

Things To Do

Our first stop was Hoi Polloi, an ecclectic restaurant with the most amazing decor and prettiest rock shandys. Another visit of interest was the photo shop, Kiki's, where we had loads of fun trying on old outfits, including boa feathers, antique gloves, hats of every kind and the most incredibly heeled shoes. Never to forget our next drink stop at The Deck, nesting against the Vaal River, where we were coaxed into drinking their famous "Pink Drinks". It was a toxic, yet refreshingly deceptive cocktail of outrageous proportions. Each one of us staggered out after the drink, a little pink around the gills.

White Water Rafting

The highlight for me had to be the white water rafting on Sunday morning. We mounted our two man inflatable kayaks and joined a group of adventure seekers, the youngest being seven years old, and made our way down the Vaal River. We had missed the floods of the river by days, but saw signs of the rush of water all along the way. Rowing under bridges, we saw huge tree trunks stuck in the bridge structure above our heads and saw the water level marks along the banks of the river, perilously close to some homes. We leisurely rowed along until we heard the white water ahead and then we took it in turns to take on the mild rapids. It was really great fun and there was a slight surge of adrenalin. It was a perfect introduction and I am definitely planning to take on bigger rapids in the future.

All in all, a great weekend getaway.

One Hundred Days until the FIFA World Cup

One hundred days to go until the FIFA 2010 World Cup. There is celebration and excitement all over South Africa. Roads are closed and traffic is extreme as South Africa gears up for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Celebrations in Durban are being held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and in Johannesburg in Sandton, where streets are being closed for an all day street party.

A Nation Celebrates
It is wonderful to have something to celebrate as the nation looks forward together in anticipation to the spin offs of hosting the World Cup.

We are all hoping that our boys will get through their first match, however, regardless of the result, soccer fever is viral in South Africa at present. Everyone is joining in the spirit of the soccer World Cup.

With a hundred days to go, the challenge has been presented that we, as South Africans, only speak positively about our nation. Speaking positively for the next hundred days can only have a good impact on the future of the country. I say, "Let's do it!" Go, Bafana Bafana! Viva South Africa!

Action Netball for the Over Forties

I must be honest, I don't have a clue what the cartoon is about, but I found it highly amusing nevertheless. Being close to 50 and never having played netball in my life, I now find myself on a team in one of the lower leagues of our local action netball club. The vast majority of the team being in their twenties, I consider myself a veteran.

Violence on the Court
As the cartoon suggests, action netball is actually a violent contact sport to an over forty sedate (wink wink) woman. I played hockey and women's football in my day, yet I find action netball to be far more fast and furious. In 2 practices I have seen 2 of the women sprawled across the court in a most unladylike manner. I woke up this morning after last night's practice with extremely stiff tendons in my ankles. For goodness sake, it is my flabby tummy that needs to feel stiff, not my very slender tendons in my ankles!

How to be a Succesful Over Forty on the Netball Court
In 2 practices I have learnt quite a lot while leaping around with young, nimble, athletic girls. So, for all you over forty women out there looking for a fun workout, take heed.

1. Look agressive - actually it is quite easy to look aggressive just by the size of my over forty body, in comparison to the young gazelles playing with me. All I have to do is put a scowl on my face and grunt repeatedly. I wonder why young Candice keeps rolling on the floor with laughter..

2. Move continuously and jump a lot - unfortunately after 5 and a half minutes of such behaviour I may have to be removed from the court to prevent a heart and lung failure. My goodness, I do need to get fit.

3. Act like you know what you are doing - when they shout, "foot error", "net abuse" or "handling", nod your head and tut tut under your breath. Learn a rule or 2 and keep shouting them out authoritatively when others abuse them. My pet rule is "3 feet away!" when my opponent is crowding in on me.

4. Go to the loo just before you play or practice - oh my goodness, at my age when I put to much enthusiasm into a leap, I find that I nearly wet my pants with the effort. The ensuing squeals of laughter from my team mates when I mention it, make me join in the squealing and the need to pee is even stronger..

As I learn more, I shall pass on my secrets. Meanwhile I am preparing for my next practice on Sunday afternoon and my first game next Wednesday night.

How to be an Optimist

I have been told on many occasions that I am one of those people who see the glass half-full. Being optimistic seems to come naturally to me. In recent times, I have had to face quite a few disastrous situations, yet I somehow always believe that it will all work out.

I've noticed that most people around me allow circumstances to get them down. So, instead of judging them for their pessimism, I thought about ways to help others to be an optimist.

Focus on Something Positive

No matter how harsh circumstances are, there is always something positive to focus on. When I ran out of cash in December, I focused on the fact that my holiday accommodation had already been prepaid. I once heard the illustration of a man driving up a winding road when a ladybug flew onto his windshield. As long as he focused on the bug, he nearly drove over the edge, but as long as he focused on the road ahead, he drove perfectly well.

There is Always Someone Worse Off

No matter how bad things seem to be, there are always others in a much worse situation. When we realize that, we are grateful for the blessings in our own life, no matter how few they may seem to be.

Help Another Person

There is something healing about reaching out and helping someone else. We can help in so many different ways - volunteering our services or time at a shelter or babies home, clearing out our cupboards and giving away decent clothing to those less advantaged than ourselves, sending a depressed friend an encouraging message, etc.

Smile

Smile at other people during the day. It is surprising how people respond. A smile is such a small thing and it brings others joy. The vast majority smile back and the minority who don't are not worth worrying about.

Sing

Music is a great mood enhancer. When we choose our favourite music and sing or hum along heartily, we'll feel positive in no time.

Use Our Senses

We all know the saying, "take time to smell the roses". I say take time to enjoy all of our senses. Listen, taste, smell, feel and look. Sensual enjoyment is a very positive experience, but we need to slow down to participate in them fully.

I bet that practicing these regularly will cause optimism in our lives - which the world surely needs.

10 Healthy Ways to Weight Loss

The battle of the bulge seems to be a never-ending struggle, however the following 10 tips will help us to lose weight, or at the very least, maintain our weight in a healthy fashion.

I am on this struggle at the moment and I have found that these 10 things definitely do work.

1. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day - firstly, it is the amount of water our bodies need, secondly it makes us full, and thirdly we are so busy trying to take in our allocated amount that it doesn't leave space for us to drink fattening drinks.

2. Eat loads of fruit and vegetables - the recommended amount of fruit and veggies are 5 portions a day. Once again, they keep us full, they are healthy and nutritious and they are water based foods which will not cause us to gain weight.

3. Eat low GI foods - low GI foods keep us full for longer and are always the healthier option. These days they are well labelled in the stores too.

4. Eat smaller meals throughout the day - this keeps our metabolism busy, but does require some planning. Have a light breakfast, a mid morning snack, a light lunch, a mid afternoon snack, and a small dinner.

5. Don't skip meals - every time I get into the habit of skipping meals due to busyness, I gain weight.

6. Find healthy snacks - instead of giving in to the craving for chocolate or crisps, find healthy alternatives like popcorn, biltong, dried fruit, and crudites. Be imaginative.

7. Eat slowly - the faster we eat, the more we eat. Taste the food and enjoy it. Chew the food properly to slow down. The longer we take to eat, the sooner we feel full.

8. Use a smaller plate - we tend to dish ourselves portions which are too large, but a smaller plate will make the portion look bigger than it actually is.

9. Fun exercise - find a way of exercising which is enjoyable. If we enjoy the outdoors, walking will be a better option than gym. If we enjoy something, we are more likely to make it a habit.

10. Always choose the better option - in different situations where our healthy eating may be compromised, just choose the healthier option available. For example, when eating out and we cannot choose our menu, turn down the starter or have a smaller portion of dessert.

All of these tips need to be incorporated into our lives as a lifestyle, rather than a "once-off". The more we do them, the easier they become. And they really do help.

A Stroll Through Downtown Durban

It's a long time since this "whitey" took a stroll through Durban's city centre. With the growth of shopping malls, it's not really necessary to go to the city centre any more, however I had an appointment in downtown Durban recently and arrived unfashionably early.

Being too early, I decided to take a lesuirely walk around the City Hall and was pleasantly surprised with the friendliness of the locals.

The Museum

The jolly Indian gatekeeper outside the Museum asked me what I was doing and then tried to convince me to sample the dated delights of the Museum. Knowing that I would not have sufficient time, I declined and we politely chatted for a while as if this was normal city behaviour, which it most certainly is not in the city where I reside.

Pigeons at the City Hall

I rounded the corner to come across an aged woman merrily feeding a large flock of pigeons on the Museum lawn. She looked so content and the pigeons seemed to know her well and hustled to get to her first. I was watching the scene when a security guard came and stood with me and told me that she feeds the pigeons every day and that they have become quite tame. She looked as though she needed a bit of feeding herself, but the pigeons seemed to feed a deeper need in her.

Taxis in Downtown Durban

I continued round the next corner to see the antics of the taxi drivers and their helpers. Hooting continually with short sharp blasts the taxi drivers did not want to waste time stopping for too long to pick up passengers, so they had helpers who leapt out of the moving vehicles and shouted out their destinations to nearby pedestrians and everybody seemed to know exactly who was going where. People leapt in and out of the mini busses in ballet-like precision.

Colourful Flea Market

As I rounded the final corner I spied a flea market across the road. I crossed at the zebra crossing and strolled through the colourful gazebos browsing through their wares. Everything from clothing to matches could be found there and I wished that I had more cash on me.

Finally I looked up at the great clock and realized that it was time for my appointment, so feeling revitalised, I made my way to my destination.

We are generally so rushed as we go about our daily business that we miss the little delights in our routine excursions. I am going to look for the extraordinary in the mundane. I'm sure that will keep a smile on my lips.

Moses Mabhida Stadium Skycar ready for 2010 FIFA World Cup

I am a confirmed Moses Mabhida Stadium junkie. The stadium is a magnificent sight and as I have been in Durban on business for the last month, I have taken countless photos every time I have have driven past the iconic stadium. I was fortunate enough to have been at the opening a week ago and swore to myself that I would ride the skycar before I leave Durban.

Imagine my joy when I drove past the stadium again on Thursday last week and saw the skycar making its way up the arch. I promptly pulled in to the parking and bought myself a ticket for R50.

I took the 3 minute ride to the top of the arch, enjoying the view all the way up. I stepped out at the top, 106 m in the air, and admired Durban from every angle. The sea breeze blowing through my hair and a group of young teamsters in training for instructing the adventure walkers were my enthusiastic companions.

Adventure Walks to the Top of the Arch and Swing Jumps

The adventure walk on the other side of the arch takes about half an hour to 45 minutes depending on one's fitness levels. It is a slightly more exciting option which will cost R75. However, for the real excitement seekers, the soon to be opened swing jump will be available. As much as I strained, I could not see where the jump will take place from. Maybe just as well, as that is the next promise that I have made to myself. As soon as I possibly can, I will be doing that jump. Perhaps I can do it with a blast of my new blue vuvuzela, instead of a shrill scream!

World AIDS Day

It's a wet rainy day in Durban, almost as if the heavens are mourning the loss of so many lives to HIV AIDS in the last few decades. I have read that cures for new diseases take at least 40 years of research and development, so hopefully we will see some sunshine on the horizon in the not too distant future.

Glimmer of Hope

One glimmer of hope is being portrayed on the Umhlanga lighthouse this morning as a huge condom was pulled over the lighthouse in an awareness campaign causing one happy woman to win $10 000 and many people to stop and think with a smile brightening their faces .

HIV Positivity

Another ray of positivity would be the countless men and women worldwide who live with HIV positively. They are HIV positive and they are still positive about life, full of the joys of possibility. They live with gusto and they inspire many around them with their attitudes.

I personally know some of these courageous people and would like to make World Aids Day a day to honour them and the many others I have not met. I would also like to honour the many selfless volunteers throughout the cities, townships and rural areas who work with the disadvantaged AIDS sufferers and give them dignity, love and hope on a daily basis.

May today bring some sort of change to diverse lives all around the globe as we proudly display our red ribbons in support of them .

The Final Countdown

We all seem to love a countdown. Think New Year's famous "5, 4, 3, 2, 1..... Happy New Year!" How about all of our web pages in South Africa plastered with FIFA World Cup countdown clocks? Remember those wonderful little calendars we received in December counting down the days to Christmas. Each day we opened a window and received a mini chocolate - what fun.

We all recognize the iconic words of the song by Europe, but what do they mean to us? Well, for different people, it will probably mean different things

A Bible believer will think of Christ's return. A final year school student will think of the day that school's out. A pregnant mom will think of the birth date. A jailbird will think of release. An unhappy employee will think of 5pm. An astronaut thinks of blast off. We each have our own countdown.

And what happens when the countdown ends? New beginnings, I guess and a new countdown!

We've had Britney and Madonna at it, Charlize Theron doing it for charity, and now Adam Lambert kissing a guy on stage at the American Music Awards. What is it with all these public same-sex kisses?

Reasons for the Kiss

I don't recall seeing too many heterosexual kisses during live performances. Is it for shock factor? Is it for publicity? Is it to make a statement? Is it to improve sales? I certainly do not claim to have the answer to that question.

If they did it for effect, they achieved their goal, as Google is abuzz with Adam's scandal and Twitter can hardly keep up. TV and newspapers are loving the gossip and everybody is talking about it - either in shocked delight or indignant offense.

No Apologies

Adam Lambert defends his performance accusing the media of double standards, accepting sexy women's risque' antics on stage, yet denouncing his. Although he has not made himself wildly popular with his performance at the AMA, there are bound to be a whole lot more people watching his video and buying his new CD.

I wonder what will be next?

Meteorite Fever, Caster Semenye and Vuvuzelas

We have had a lot of excitement in South Africa recently. First we had the Caster Semenye debacle', then the ongoing vuvuzela controversies, and recently the National Anthem being slaughtered by a Rastafarian, and now our very own meteorite! How exciting.

Meteor in the Sky

The sad thing is that although it was spotted in the sky by many people, nobody seems to have seen where any of the debris landed. I find that kind of weird. I would have expected a sudden thumping of rocks of various sizes landing in the area would be pretty noticeable. However, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Now we have a meteorite rock search. All sorts of stories will probably emerge regarding aliens and we should have a fair amount of entertainment over the next short season. Already Wikus Van Der Merwe and his "prawns" from the movie, District 9, are being acknowledged.

Illegal to Own a Piece of Meteorite

Another interesting fact to remember while you eagerly scramble over the Limpopo terrain looking for galactic rock, is that it is illegal to own or keep a piece of meteorite. Now that is quite scary, because how do we amateurs know whether we have meteorite rock or earth rock in our possession? It causes my imagination to take flights of its own - remember Superman and his kryptonite.

Airport Delays and People's Reactions

I'm sitting at the airport waiting for my flight, which has been delayed for an hour due to bad weather. It was initially delayed for half an hour, and while I was checking in, another half hour was added on to it. At first, I was highly irritated, but then accepted the inconvenience and settled down to use the time constructively.

Delay at Airports

It is quite interesting to watch people's reactions. There are the uptight who get really angry and give the poor check in staff a hard time as if they purposely arranged the delay. They scream and perform and provide much needed entertainment for the rest of us patiently waiting in the queue. If we didn't know about the delay before this, thanks to their tantrums, the entire departures hall of the airport now knows - no need to announce it over the PA system.

There are the courteous who politely acknowledge it, shake their heads subtly, and make their way to the coffee shop to while away the time, being as little bother as possible.

There are the corporates who make annoyed sounds, snatch up their boarding pass, immediately make frantic calls on their blackberries and briskly stride to the nearest hotspot and whisk open their laptops, never to look up again until the flight is finally announced.

People Watchers Don't React Much

There are the people watchers who don't react much but find a seat with the most traffic passing by and sit and watch the passers by, making up delicious stories about perfect strangers.

I am sure that there are a still a whole lot of categories which I have not yet noticed with various reactions and idiosyncrasies. That's what makes humanity so very interesting. Despite all being thrown to the same circumstance, like a delayed flight, there are so many varied responses.

I also find it very interesting that we all want to be categorized in one way or another. How often do we fill in surveys to see what type of people we are? We read the results and agree with the parts we like and disagree with the parts we find offensive, but we do like to fit in somewhere. That's what causes so many interesting sub cultures in society.

On that note, let me close my lap top, grab a cappacinno, find a seat in a busy area and do some people watching.

Fun Things To Do on a Recessionary Budget

Browsing through my twitter posts this morning, I came upon an article about how South Africa may escape recession in the third quarter, which I quickly looked up and read. It was a fairly positive article talking about our slow recovery in the next two years. Recovery is wonderful, but two years - eish! Ok, so that gives me another two years to live on a really tight budget. I can do that.

Budget Fun is Challenging

So how am I going to have fun? Fun is easy, but budget fun is a little more challenging. In order to motivate myself I have decided to do the following. Once I have gone through the list, I need to come up with another ten, so if you have any suggestions, you know what to do.

10 Fun Things To Do

1. Watch a good video and make loads of popcorn to share with friends during the movie
2. Have a picnic on the bed
3. Take a walk somewhere scenic, like the beach or a park
4. Visit an old age home or a children's home and spread some love
5. Go window shopping at a shopping mall - at night when the shops are closed and I can't be tempted
6. Play a board game with a gang of friends
7. Make out with the one I love
8. Read a really good book
9. On a cool day find a sunny spot to spread my blanket and laze in the sun
10. Have a self-pamper session with manicure, pedicure and facial

Enjoy life!

Is It Just Me Battling to Exercise?

I love the look of a sleek, slick, fit and healthy body. Even better, I love the feeling of being fit. I love being able to bound up a flight of stairs without collapsing in a fit of coughing. I love running a short circuit in our neighbourhood without the feeling that all the oxygen was suddenly released off the planet. I love walking briskly and suddenly realising that I am the one who is still breathing evenly while everybody else wheezes along.

So, why then, is it such a schlep to motivate myself to exercise? Once I begin, I always enjoy myself, apart from the few times that I overdid it in wild enthusiasm. If I know that it will be fun, why do I have the need to force myself into action? I love eating and I don't need to force myself to eat. I love reading and I don't need to force myself to read. I could go on and on. I cannot understand why it is so difficult to do something that brings good results and that is fun once I get down and do it.

Some Easily Motivate Themselves to Exercise

So, what I want to know is, is it just me? I know some people who eagerly leap out of bed on cold early mornings to get in enough running mileage, or who pry their eyes open at some dark phase of the morning and push weights at the gym. When I awaken in the mornings all I want to do is snuggle under my covers for as long as possible.

Then there are those who rush out of the office the second it is acceptable and dash to their form of exercise before going home to cook, bath and all the rest of our nightly chores. When I leave work, I usually feel rather exhausted and enjoy a leisurely drive home, popping in to the shops to get something easy to prepare for supper, pour myself a glass of wine and get on with dinner, so that I can soak in a hot tub, possibly with a book, and then lounge in front of my current favourite reality TV show and nod off.

The only thing that causes me to stop at the gym is the fact that I have prepaid for it and if I don't go a certain amount of times a month I will lose it. And I can't afford a new gym contract. So I force myself and once there, amazing - I enjoy it!

When the Going gets Tough..

So many times I have heard stories of strength through adversity. People in dire circumstances who have had to innovate in order to survive, who land up discovering a whole new way of life. Isn't it amazing that we seem to need some sort of hardship to learn life lessons, or to find new pathways to success in the entirety of its meaning? I wonder why we don't often learn the same kind of lessons during times of ease and prosperity.

The old saying, "when the going gets tough, the tough get going," seems to be so very true. "Tough" is also a relative term. What is tough for me could be a breeze for you, and what is tough for you may be totally extreme for me.

Our Response to Pain

One thing that has always fascinated me is the way people respond to pain in its various forms. Two people brought up in the same family and environment often respond in completely different ways in situations.

I was involved in working with abused women some years ago and it always amazed me how one woman would rise up and take hold of opportunities presented to her while many others would give up and wallow in their hardships. What makes one "tough" and others seem weak?

The Optimist and the Pessimist

I once heard a joke about twin sons where the one was the eternal optimist and the other a complete pessimist. The father decided to test their attitudes and so for their birthday he filled the pessimist's room full of brand new expensive state-of-the-art toys and filled the optimist's room with horse manure. He eavesdropped on the boys and was amazed. He heard the pessimist moaning and groaning that he would have to keep his room tidy and that he was fearful of breaking the toys, so he went outside the optimist's room. To his surprise he heard giggling and the sound of digging. "With all of this horse manure in the room, there has to be a pony here somewhere!"

As for me, I choose to be one of the "tough".

Does Crime Pay?

I woke up this morning to hear the news on the radio that our local supermarket had been robbed by 3 car loads of thugs in the early hours of the morning. I live in Gauteng Province, also dubbed "Gangster Paradise" by many and have had 2 experiences with thieves and survived to compare horror stories at dinner parties.

Worldwide Escalating Crime Stats

So many South Africans have fled to distant shores already to find a better quality of life, yet I wonder. I have travelled extensively and still love the nation I was born in, despite the crime. I do not see a crime free existence in Britain or the United States when I watch CNN and Sky News, instead I see escalating crime statistics.

Living in South Africa

Living in South Africa raises a nation of entrepreneurial, resilient and street-wise people. People who know how to go the distance, who know what it is to work hard and achieve, and who live fully alive every moment that they are alive. Anyone brought up in South Africa has had ample training to live anywhere in the world. South Africans are used to diversity, and although there are the few extremists who spoil everything, generally the Rainbow Nation lives up to it's picture of different cultures living side by side.

Challenges abound and crime is a royal pain in the ass, but crime will eventually have it's day and the real men and women of the nation will stand tall!
